Our main class will always be the heart of Swan Samba – full of energy, learning and plenty to keep everyone progressing. But if you’re craving extra challenge, faster pace and the chance to help shape the band’s next steps, our Bloco class is for you. This monthly session is designed for experienced drummers and movers who want to dig deeper. Some of what we do will be about tightening and refining existing skills, while other parts will push into uncharted territory – experimenting with new rhythms, choreography and creative ideas. Bloco members will also have opportunities to take part in gigs and events with limited performer spots, making this the perfect way to level up and contribute to the wider band. Spaces are very limited and by invitation only due to the nature of the Bloco band. But the energy will be high, and it’s just £5 for the hour. Bloco Classes take place once a month, usually on the first Thursday of the month between 6pm-7pm.



Samba Why do you sometime refer to the band as Bateria? The term bateria means “drum kit” in Portuguese and Spanish. In Brazil, the word is also used to describe a Brazilian samba band. Where does Samba originate from? Samba originates from Brazil, but the rhythms can be traced back to Africa. What makes a Samba beat? Samba rhythms are extremely syncopated, this means the rhythm has displaced beats or accents where you would not expect them, which gives Samba music a very distinctive vibe. How fast is Samba music? At around 104 beats per minute, Samba music is fast. Was Samba made illegal in Brazil? Initially the Brazilian Government saw Samba's incorporation of African drumming as a link to Afro Brazilian cults and any Samba gathering was swiftly shut down, musicians arrested and there instruments destroyed. Today, Brazil recognise Samba as part of its cultural heritage. Gigs Are you available for hire? Our talented drummers are available for bookings throughout Hampshire all year round. With the sound of our drums carrying for miles, we’re sure to attract a crowd and create an unforgettable atmosphere. How long do you play for at events? Our standard set typically lasts between 20-40 minutes, with the option to do multiple sets at larger events. How many people are there in a Samba band? Why do people join a Samba Band? We talk to some of our band members about their Swan Samba experience. DAWN My son and I joined the band 2 years ago. We had seen Swan Samba perform at local events and we both loved the sound. Neither of us had drummed before, so I took a little persuading to sign up but I’m so glad we did! After a long illness, my 17-year-old son was finally on the road to recovery and it was fantastic for us to find something positive we could do together. The band members were all so friendly and welcoming. Tuesday night drumming practice soon became something for us both to look forward to. To start with, I was terrible at drumming but loved the energy and groove and quickly discovered that the secret is to just smile like you know what you are doing and keep going! My son is autistic, and he took to drumming quickly and is amazing at it. We’ve both really loved learning a new skill and with time and practice I’m gradually getting better. My son is away at uni now, but he still comes back to join the band during his holidays. I’ve always loved live music and thought it would be a real buzz to play as part of a band. The mission: to learn Swan Samba's new song 'Health' and raise funds for mental health charities in our local community. We've been absolutely stoked with the results, as bands have learnt, recorded and submitted their take on the track, all with the aim to raise awareness and support mental health in their area. Swan Samba is affiliated to Roynon Performing Arts. Roynon have been established for almost 40 years. They have taught generations within the community in a range of genres and styles. This includes Tap, Ballet, Modern, Contemporary, Jazz, Acro, Commercial and Hip-Hop. There are also new classes for toddlers (Bop Tots) and Boys class. The drama and music faculties include instrumental tuition, professional vocal training, Musical Theatre, recording techniques, stage direction and script writing Roynon follow recognised syllabus including ISTD, Acrobatic Arts, Progressing Ballet Technique, Trinity and Rock School.

It'll take a while to reach gigging level but it all really depends on your levels of commitment and practice. No matter what instrument you play in the band, practice the samba drum rudiments. Being able to play things like clavé will massively help no matter what your rhythmic focus is for a gig. Immerse yourself in the music! Read up. Watch footage. Find out about the culture behind the music and why certain bits are important. Groove! Keep key rhythms and sections going for a long time. Samba drumming can be as much about vibe as it is about saying short, important phrases. As you play in the band, keep your head up, wait for the signal, then the count of four from the caller. All songs and the grooves within them are signalled by a hand action from the caller at the front. The caller will likely show the four bars to go, then give a further count of four crotchets (single beats on the pulse) and then expect to go into the new part in a song or jam. Look out for calls that do and do not include your instrument section! Songs vs. Grooves. Often, there are recorded whole songs but then when live, these songs can be often jammed out....

Whatever musical form you learn, it’s good to know what you’re playing and it’s background. Here's a samba drum guide to explain the drums used by Hampshire band Swan Samba and the context to some of the common grooves. Surdo The rhythmic backbone to the band. There are three sizes of this samba drum, commonly called Marcacao, Reposta and Cortador. The Marcacao is the deepest (bom! ) sound, so for common Batucada and Reggae grooves it plays the stronger 2nd and 4th beats. The Reposta is then the higher sounding (bim! ), usually tuned a 4th note interval above. The Cortador plays a similar role to the drum kit’s high tom. It plays signature rhythms filling in the gaps and for samba reggae is often the iconic offbeat (in between the pulse of the song). Surdo drum line up at the Romsey Lantern Parade 2021 Ganza A vital role in keeping pulse but in a gentle, subtle way. The ganza is a fantastic starter instrument as it helps with dexterity and sense of tempo and isn’t too loud. Typically this instrument is played horizontally and held at either end. To make a sudden stop in the groove, it’s in the flick of the wrist! Caixa This samba drum is usually found at the back of the band, playing a repetitive, continuous groove in amongst the mix of other drums and percussion. Samba is a term that can be used for lots different styles. The Swan Samba classes and performance group uses a fusion mix across a range of styles but is with a strong samba reggae foundation. Like mainstream reggae, it often has a slightly more laid back groove and has strong beats on 2 and 4 of each bar. That said, certain samba reggae bands are anything but slow... ! Different Samba styles originate from specific areas of Brazil. Maracatu for instance comes from the cities of Recife and Olinda. Ijexa is associated with the north east of Brazil, but can trace its roots back to West African styles of drumming. Samba reggae has parts similar to Batucada and comes from Bahia, north-east Brazil. The main drums used by the band include Surdo's, large base drums that drive the main rhythm of the songs, Caixas which are a type of Snare Drums and Repiniques (or reps) which are tuned very high to produce a tone that cuts through the sound of the rest of the 'Bateria' and is often the lead instrument. This will include all ages and abilities, different cultures and ethnicities, neurodivergent communities, older generations including the elderly and families receiving respite care. The project is curated by Swan Samba, a Hampshire (UK) based drum and movement group established 2019. The classes and performances had been set up to enhance community and make accessible, fun music. ‘Drum for Health’ has been set up in response to the positive feedback and demand from community organisations, businesses and the local community, to bring hyper-accessible resources, workshops and performances to help and improve wellbeing. ‘Drum for Health' will be bookmarked by a number of international events: World Make Music Day 1st Oct 2024 The band will run a sequence of workshops in community organisations, public spaces and alongside authorities (local council, libraries, etc). World Mental Health Day 10th Oct 2024Bands from across the UK and beyond will come together to learn a specifically created song, perform it and release an online collaboration music video. Additional live videos will also be released. International Students Day 17th Nov 2024Bands and artists involved will swap content and learning via live and pre-recorded videos and streaming. This year, the Whole School Show will come to The Point, Eastleigh on 29th & 30th June. It's a fantastic time to celebrate and showcase the skills learnt and improved in class.

The Whole School Show is the biggest event in the RPA calendar, where all classes of all ages & abilities come together, showcase their skills from class and put the school’s take on a classic story. We are proud to say that our samba drumming and movement classes are a part of Roynon Performing Arts. The school has been established since 1981, supporting the community and students in their learning and enjoyment of the arts. This year, the Whole School Show will come to The Point, Eastleigh on 29th & 30th June. It's a fantastic time to celebrate and showcase the skills learnt and improved in class. All ages and abilities are invited to be a part of this fantastic and unique experience. What's more, profits are donated to our affiliated charity Abby's Heroes, a local children's cancer charity that has deep connections with the school. This year will be the 7th theatre performance for the school, showcasing dance, music and drama from across the school's 60+ classes. This will also include an appearance of Swan Samba!

Swan Samba will be playing at the Eastleigh Mela Festival again this year. This FREE fantastic family day out with a cultural twist is a firm fixture in Eastleigh’s calendar. Expect an extravaganza of dancing, colours & music, children’s activities, demonstrations, stalls, food from around the world and much, much more. Highlights include a Climbing Wall, Circus skills, Street Food stalls and Cookery Demos. The main stage will feature a constant programme of live music and dance by both local and national performers. “Mela” is the Sanskrit word meaning ‘meeting‘, ‘fair‘ or ‘gathering‘ and ‘celebrations‘ of all kinds. Hampshire based Swan Samba are a drumming, dancing and Brazilian arts organisation open to ages 11+ and all abilities. Swan Samba will be performing at 11am and again at 1pm.



Swan Samba will be playing at the Good Festival which raises funds for the Hampshire Medical Fund charity.

Good Festival hosted by the Hampshire Medical Fund is an action-packed, fun-filled, super duper day out for all the family! The festival takes place annually every June and is held at Dummer Down Farm near Basingstoke in Hampshire. Good Festival raises vital money for the NHS hospitals of Basingstoke, Winchester and Andover to purchase cutting-edge medical equipment. Performance times 10:40 and 12:15 around the main stage area.

2024 Bishops Waltham Country Fayre: More stalls, live music, food, and entertainment, featuring Swan Samba's lively opening performance.

The 2024 Bishops Waltham Country Fayre with more stalls, live music throughout the day, dancing and a variety of food outlets, real ale, Prosecco and all the usual favourites including the dog agility, kids’ crafts corner, live ferrets, racing pigs, and our raffle with loads of fantastic prizes! Swan Samba will be performing live to open the Country Fayre.

The band will be performing outside West Quay II, Southampton linked in with the dates for Carnivale. Swan Samba has been invited by the event organisers of the large-scale shopping centre to perform on the open area overlooking the impressive, modern architecture. The band will be doing a static performance for passing shopper and those in nearby restaurants. Donations will also be accepted for this unique event. The performance is to coincide with carnival week in Rio (9th - 17th February). We can't wait to see you all for our performance in central Southampton and bring the carnival vibe to the south coast!

Sound Winchester is a new community-led project promoting wellbeing through participation in local music and aural activities in Winchester. Swan Samba are proud to be a part of its launch on Saturday 17th February 2024. The event will be a one-day taster at The Arc featuring local providers, artists & teachers showcasing services and welcoming you to find out what's available and get involved. Swan Samba are set to open the event, shortly after an announcement from the Mayor of Winchester. This year, the Whole School Show will come to The Point, Eastleigh on 29th & 30th June. It's a fantastic time to celebrate and showcase the skills learnt and improved in class.

The Whole School Show is the biggest event in the RPA calendar, where all classes of all ages & abilities come together, showcase their skills from class and put the school’s take on a classic story. We are proud to say that our samba drumming and movement classes are a part of Roynon Performing Arts. The school has been established since 1981, supporting the community and students in their learning and enjoyment of the arts. This year, the Whole School Show will come to The Point, Eastleigh on 29th & 30th June. It's a fantastic time to celebrate and showcase the skills learnt and improved in class. All ages and abilities are invited to be a part of this fantastic and unique experience. What's more, profits are donated to our affiliated charity Abby's Heroes, a local children's cancer charity that has deep connections with the school. This year will be the 7th theatre performance for the school, showcasing dance, music and drama from across the school's 60+ classes. This will also include an appearance of Swan Samba!

Our samba band will be processing the streets of Totton for the lantern parade.

This is a new one for the band's diary so very exciting! Detail direct from the organisers: The parade leaves library car park at 5pm and walks towards ASDA roundabout, then onto commercial road, where it turns around, once it has reached Beaumont road. It then comes back to the roundabout. The parade congregates round the roundabout while the Christmas lights are switched on. Then it’s back to library car park and finish.



Swan Samba will be playing at B&Q HQ and the event will be broadcast live across all B&Q stores nationwide.

This October, B&Q will aim to raise over £200,000 with a special fundraising weekend to support homelessness charity Shelter and its vital work to defend the right to safe housing. Swan Samba will be playing at B&Q House (HQ) supporting the 24-hour dance-a-thon with B&Q Customer and Digital Director, Paddy Earnshaw. The event will be broadcast live across all B&Q stores nationwide.



To help support mental health, Swan Samba are teaming up with Solent Mind and bringing together samba bands from across the world and YOU for World Mental Health Day!

To help support mental health, Swan Samba are teaming up with Solent Mind and bringing together samba bands from across the world and YOU for World Mental Health Day! On Tuesday 10th October, the samba band will be releasing a specifically created song to celebrate World Mental Health Day and an online collaboration song involving bands from across the globe. The band will also perform and house a fundraiser for Solent Mind on the 10th. We have seen time and again how powerfully positive drumming and movement can be for wellbeing, so we want to share this energy with others! This fundraising project for mental health involves 3 key things: 1. Samba bands, artists and teachers coming together to learn and perform a new song, to be released on World Mental Health Day. 2. Fundraising performances in the local community to bring people together and raise awareness for mental health. 3. Easy-to-access, fun and engaging resources that will be shared, for free, via Solent Mind to get households moving, drumming and helping support their wellbeing! The motorcade procession of vintage and classic cars & bikes starts at midday in the High Street The fun day takes place at Hoe Road Recreation Ground with live music, inflatables, pony rides, craft stalls, children's rides and dog show. Food and drink stalls available.

The Hampshire Medical Fund charity, which buys cutting-edge medical equipment for Basingstoke, Winchester and Andover hospitals, was founded by the late Earl of Carnarvon in 1981. Dummer Down Farm is a working farm and home to the Ferguson family. With a popular coffee & grocery shop, farm brewery & taproom and The Dummer Cricket Centre, the farm will kindly host Good Festival on Sunday.
